How to Troubleshoot the Craftsman 32 cc Weed Eater

Craftsman 32 cc string trimmers are powered by a 4-cycle gasoline engine. Craftsman 32 cc trimmers are capable of taking on larger and more heavy-duty trimming tasks involving taller grass and weeds with larger stems. Periodic operating issues with a Craftsman 32 cc trimmer can oftentimes be resolved by the operator with a few troubleshooting steps that can help to identify the source of the operating issues.

  • Unleaded gasoline
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Replacement spark plug
  • Spark plug gap gauge
  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement spark arrestor

    Remove the cap from the fuel tank and determine if there is enough fuel to start and operate the Craftsman 32 cc trimmer. Add unleaded gasoline that was recently purchased to the gas tank and place the lid securely on the tank.

    Remove the spark plug from the Craftsman trimmer if the engine will not start. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Loosen and remove the plug from the trimmer engine. Obtain a suitable replacement spark plug and use a gap tool to set the gap at .025 inches. Install the plug in the Craftsman trimmer and connect the spark plug wire to the plug tip.

  • Remove the air filter and check to see if it is plugged if the engine will not idle properly. Remove the cover from the air filter housing on the side of the Craftsman trimmer, with a screwdriver if necessary. Pull the filter from the housing and replace with a new one if it is worn, damaged or excessively dirty. Place the new filter in the housing and secure the cover in place.

    Locate the muffler on the side of the trimmer. Loosen and remove the screw holding the diverter and spark screen in place on the muffler with a screwdriver. Pull the diverter from the muffler and then the spark screen. Replace the spark screen with a suitable replacement- assemble the diverter and screw it back into the muffler.

  • Remove grass, weeds, string, wire or other debris that might have become wrapped around the trimmer head of the Craftsman 32 cc trimmer, causing it to not operate properly. Pull grass or other debris from around the trimmer head and use scissors or wire cutters, if necessary.
