Murray 22 Lawnmower Oil Type

The 22-inch lawnmower from Murray gets its power through the gasoline ignited inside the internal combustion engine. Since it doesn`t use pre-mixed fuel, the operator will need to use regular automotive engine oil to keep the crankcase lubricated. If the lubricating system fails, the engine will start grinding, creating enormous heat and possibly blowing out.

Murray Oil Type

Murray lawnmowers do not come shipped with oil already in the crankcase as with some manufacturers that perform quality inspections at the factory. Furthermore, most Murray lawnmowers operate with a common engine, such as that made by Briggs & Stratton, even though the mower is a Murray brand. Since most lawnmowers will operate in similar conditions at similar temperatures, the safest type of oil to use is a high-quality detergent oil with a service rating of SAE 30.

In Extreme Weather

  • However, in some extreme weather conditions the mower may need a different viscosity oil. If you operate your Murray lawnmower repeatedly in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, switch to a multi-viscosity oil rated at SAE 5W 30. This will aid in start up during cold weather. For temperatures that regularly go above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, leave SAE 30 in the engine but do not use a multi-viscosity oil, such as SAE 5W 30, which will burn oil too quickly to offer protection.

Murray Oil Check

Murray suggests following your model`s specific engine requirements taken directly from the engine manufacturer as some engines may vary slightly. However, all Murray lawnmowers need their oil checked, before every use, to ensure adequate lubrication in the crankcase. Put the mower on a level surface, when checking the oil, to get a more accurate reading. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe off the tip with a rag. Put the dipstick back in and wait a few moments before checking the oil level.

Murray Oil Change

For all Murray lawnmowers, regardless of engine manufacturer, Murray suggests changing the oil after every 25 hours. Run the engine for at least 10 minutes so the oil can heat up and drain out any impurities more freely. Drain the oil into an approved oil container and replace the plug before putting more oil into the tank. Pour the oil in slowly and use a funnel to reduce spillage. Clean up any spills with a rag to reduce the fire hazard.
