How to Grow Moss on Clay Pots
Clay pots don`t just hold flowers and plants, they also add their own decorative touch to your garden and landscape. A new pot may not blend in and look natural in the garden. Encouraging moss growth on the outside of the pot helps age the pot with a living embellishment that adds depth to your garden design. Use moss that is already growing on rocks or trees in your yard. These mosses are already thriving in your local environment so are well suited to any pots you plan to display.
Things You`ll Need
- Moss
- Blender
- Beer
- Sugar
- Foam brush
Gather moss from your yard. Remove any dirt from the base of the moss clumps and shake out any debris embedded in the moss.
Place approximately 1/4 cup moss in a blender. Pour 1 can of beer into the blender and add 2 tsp. sugar, or two sugar cubes.
Secure the lid on the blender and blend on high for 30 seconds. The mixture should be soupy with few lumps.
Smear the mixture onto the clay pot with your fingers or paint it on with a large foam brush. Cover the entire pot or apply the moss to specific areas to accent them.
Set the pot in a cool, shaded area of the garden. Mist the surface with water one to two times a day until the moss is established and growing well.

- Substitute 1 cup of buttermilk or plain yogurt for the beer and sugar if desired.
