How to Get Rid of Beetles

Beetles serve a beneficial purpose in lawns and gardens in that they eat harmful pests that feed on plants. Unfortunately, beetles sometimes eat the plants themselves. Beetles also breed quickly and can multiply into an infestation in just a few months. One of the best ways to rid any garden or lawn of beetles is a beetle trap. In addition, beetle traps are not toxic and will not harm pets or children.

Things You`ll Need

  • Beetle trap
  • String
  • Select an area of the yard that is out of the way, but still close to the majority of the beetle infestation. If the yard is more than 5,000 square feet, multiple traps are needed.

  • Assemble the beetle trap per the manufacturer`s instructions. This usually consists of opening a large bag and attaching it to a plastic or cardboard hanger.

  • Open the bait package and insert it into the holes at the top of the hanger. The bait is supplied along with the trap.

  • Insert the 2-foot-tall stake, provided with the trap, into the ground and hang the beetle trap by the loop on the top. The bottom of the bag should be no lower than 1 foot above the ground.

  • Allow the bag to sit undisturbed for 12 to 24 hours, then check the trap, which should contain beetles.

  • Detach the bag and twist the top of it closed. Tie the top of the bag securely with string to seal it closed.

  • Dispose of the bag along with normal household waste.
